Shakespeare Workshop 2015

Also this year the English courses of the MSS 12 (advanced courses) had the chance to take part in quite an extraordinary Shakespeare Workshop.

For this reason the English actor Julius D'Silva, who acquired a 'Post Graduate Certificate of Education' at the university of Middlesex visited the Martinus-Gymnasium Linz. Julius D'Silva is a member of the 'Royal Shakespeare Company' and carried out this workshop already during the last years.

The main focus of the workshop was on the play 'Romeo and Juliet'. To prepare us for acting exercises we started with relaxation exercises. Afterwards he taught us different methods with which it was simple for us to act in front of other schoolmates.

One of these methods was, for example, to read a vers loudly again and again to find the right stress. (e.g. Two households, alike in dignity, from the prologue)

To understand the content and to be able to act with the right emotions, D'Silva briefly explained the background of the play. Moreover, he showed us parallels as to the main conflict between then and now.

The initial shyness and fear got lost quickly and we were relaxed and became more open. Finally, we have found out that the exercises have helped us to talk more freely before an audience and to be more self-confident. This is something many of us will need in their future jobs.

I would recommend the workshop to those who are afraid of talking and acting in front of an audience. But also to everybody who is interested in a practical approach to one of the most famous love stories rather than a theoretical one.
